math learning

Growing up, we’d often ask when we’re going to use that algebra, geometry, and calculus in the real world. Now that we’re in the real world, it’s so obvious that math is a foundational part of modern day technology, engineering, science, finance, and so much more. Our page is here to assist, whether you need some extra help in understanding math concepts or want to take the next step in your career by learning the many applications math has to offer.

So we’ll help you learn with the following sections…

table of contentsI. Introduction As you’re reading now, we’ll overview Math and discuss the best way to learn.

  • Financial modeler

Examples of Math as a Career Supplement

  • Building algorithms to automate processes
  • Improving models in pricing, financial projection, etc
  • Leveraging the power of data capture in your business for key insights

The Learning Section you see below is designed to teach you learning pathMath as comprehensively and efficiently as possible, while maintaining a low cost. There are tons of math education sources out there and we’ve spent countless hours determining the best ones for this goal.

Our Learning Page is designed to help you learn the math topics that are used in the professional world. Math is so poorly taught in our early years, where it’s all theoretical and teachers can’t explain how you’ll use it. We want to change that so you can bolster this important professional skill.

So for each math topic, we’ll advise you on some good learning sources and then help you with how it applies to other subjects (technology, business, science, etc). That way you can get the most out of your learning and know exactly where it will help you.

II. MATH LEARNING

Algebramath learning

Introduction… Algebra is used on a regular basis in so many business functions and forms the basis for advanced math in science and engineering. We all learn algebra around high school age but never seem to apply it as an ongoing learning method. This is a mistake.

If you’re looking to brush up on your skills or think it could help in your line of work, we have some highly rated sources to help you do this…

  • online course

    Algebra from Khan Academy

Math is Khan Academy’s specialty and they teach it really well. It’s organized very logically and the teaching style makes it favorable to the student. Oh and all their content is free!

  • online course

    College Algebra and Problem Solving

Nothing new on this one but gives you a second option. The reviews tell the story: how many students weren’t learning properly in school but the way the instructors taught made learning fun and successful for them

Calculus

Introduction… Calculus is almost always a prerequisite to learning most subjects at the university (business, science, engineering, computer science). We actually disagree with the order. We think you should first learn the industry or subject and then use calculus as a tool to improve your capability. That way calculus isn’t so theoretical anymore.

Regardless of which order, calculus is extremely important in all quantitative subjects. So we’re going to go a bit deeper with multiple sources for learning. As you learn, we’d urge you to think about how you can apply it to your profession. Actively seek that answer and you’ll learn calculus in a much more useful way.

Here are the learning sources we like most…

  • online course

    Calculus by Khan Academy

Like with algebra, this is their bread and butter. And it’s great because they teach each topic (derivatives, integrals, etc) through application to real world subjects. This doesn’t get deep but is a great introductory course in calculus.

NOTE: You have to go to a different page to do differential, integral, and multivariable calculus videos. Simply click the top menu and click ‘Math by Subject’

  • online course

    Calculus Two: Sequences & Series

The Khan Academy course only introduced these topics and this course will go much deeper. Sequences & series have applications in financial analysis, data science, and programming so is useful to learn as its own course

    Calculus Applications

One more optional course is to take another one in calculus applications. Not much is new here but another course to apply learning to the real world

Linear Algebra

Introduction… Linear algebra is a big subject in the computer science and data science worlds. There are many applications in the real world and thus a subject well worth learning.

We link a couple sources to make sure you get the most out of this subject…

  • online course

Linear Algebra – Foundations to Frontiers

This is our favorite linear algebra course because it actually applies it to data science within the course. That’s why most people will learn the subject and makes it easier to understand. Oh and the reviews are quite good too!

  • online course

    Pure Math Linear Algebra

If you’re learning linear algebra for math purposes rather than data science, you might prefer a different source. We have two we like if you prefer that style. The first is a recorded linear science class from MIT and the second visualizes linear algebra subjects in an innovative video series. Both are high quality…

    MIT Linear Algebra Series

    Essence of linear algebra

Geometry

Introduction… Geometry has geometry learningapplications in many jobs including the physical sciences, life sciences, architecture, manufacturing, and engineering. This subject is often taught in middle schools but can get more advanced for these applications.

So we’ll cover some good sources in our learning page as well…

  • online course

    Geometry on Khan Academy

Continuing with Khan Academy’s specialty, they have the top geometry teaching. This will get you to an intermediate level but coverage is pretty comprehensive

  • online course

    MIT Advanced Geometry Courses

Depending on how you apply geometry, you’ll likely want more on the subject and MIT’s Opencourseware is the place to find it. They have courses for algebraic geometry, physical geometry, and more

Statistics

One of Reverse Tide’s favorite subjects is statistics because it’s being used so frequently in exciting subjects like data science and machine learning, along with many other traditional applications. By learning math and statistics, you’re really setting yourself up nicely to start specializing in some of today’s most relevant skills (technology, analytics, science, and more). Since statistics is a big subject, we have our own learning page dedicated to the subject. So we’ll send you over there to get a bit more detail. Here’s our link…

Data Science & Analytics

Once you learn statistics and have this background in calculus, linear algebra, and other math subjects, it’s time to start applying it. The best place to do that is in data science & analytics. This field is perhaps the most exciting profession to be in right now. Jobs are in hot demand, salaries are very high, lucrative businesses are being started throughout this field, and exciting technological advances are happening every day. Introduction… Sometimes math is just using numbers to help you solve real problems. It doesn’t have to have specific industry applicability but merely real life application. So we want to get out of the complexity and simplify math a little bit.

These are some sources anyone can learn from…
